A
potted history of Lydbrook Band
This website has been launched just in time to celebrate the Band's 80th Anniversary. Formed in 1923, the Band was first known as the Lydbrook Reed & Brass Band, it's original conductor being Mr. Maynard Childs. The first photo of the Band, taken in 1924 can be viewed here with a Christmas program. Records tell us that bands existed in Lydbrook over 100 years ago, and that the present band was an amalgamation of three smaller bands. Lydbrook Band has progressed well over the years, being successful in local and national competitions, as well as having an outstanding reputation for its concert performances. Without doubt, the Band's most famous son is Lyndon Baglin, and it was Lyndon who returned to the Band in 1979 as its conductor and during the next seven years progressed the Band from a lowly 3rd section outfit to a Championship section band. The Band's most famous contest success to date is the runners up prize in the National Championships of Great Britain, held at the Wembley Conference Centre in 1994. The Band, conducted by Brian Howard, gave an outstanding performance of "Essence of Time" by Peter Graham, to gain the national honour. |
