| What
a great concert we had on 9th May at the Forest Theatre with our
guest artist David
Childs. David’s playing
was absolutely superb but what impressed also was his contact with the
audience and his relaxed and informal manner. He is certainly a great
ambassador for bands and we wish him well for the future. Just to avoid any confusion (caused by me) the concert at Lydbrook Church on 22nd May will start at 7.30 p.m. Admission is free with a collection at the end of the concert for the Trefor Evans Trust and Lydbrook Church. Our guests that evening are Brass Band Excelsior Ferwert from Holland who are on a short tour of the West of England. During their stay they will give concerts in Cardiff, Bath and Lydbrook. I’m sure we will have a great evening. Just to finish, we wish a speedy recovery to Debbie Galliott and Alison Howley who have both been unwell lately and we look forward to having them back at band very soon.

| First of all many congratulations to the Gloucestershire
Youth Band who won the Intermediate Section of the National Youth Championships
of Great Britain last week.
The band, which is made up of players from many local bands and schools, was only formed 4 years ago and this is a tremendous achievement. Three members of Lydbrook Band were amongst the successful team, Dan Moss on Cornet, Otis Williams on Baritone and Osian Griffiths on Percussion. Many congratulations also to Rhiannon Symonds (Trombone) who passed her Grade 8 with distinction at just 11 years of age; a great achievement and well done to Rhiannon. Last but not least, congratulations to Stephen Sykes for winning the British phase of the Lions European Music Competition in Birmingham last week. Stephen will now go to the final in Finland during September. Tickets for our next concert “Big Band Visits the Proms” are now on sale from Barbara (01594 860944). The first half of the concert will feature “big band” music with such numbers as Miller Magic, Swingtime Religion, Puttin’ on the Ritz and Peanut Vendor. Sue Black will be joining the band for the Proms singalong and, of course, David Childs on Euphonium is our virtuoso guest and we look forward to some very special euphonium playing during the evening. A note for the diary is a concert in Lydbrook Church on Friday, 22nd May when the band will be joined by a Championship band from Holland - “Excelsior Ferwert”. The concert starts at 7.30 p.m.; entry is free with a retiring collection for Lydbrook Church funds and the Trefor Evans Trust. (See Excelsior Ferwent on www.ExcelsiorFerwert.nl). Finally, we are pleased to see that following our spectacular result at Torquay the band has now broken into the top 100 of the world rankings. The new ranking list issued on 27th March shows the band at number 92 in the rankings - a rise of 63 places. Well done the band!! Robert Morgan |

It’s ten years this year since the band embarked on its tour of a lifetime to South Africa and Zimbabwe. Eighteen days were spent in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Victoria Falls and Harare giving concert and master classes to thousands of locals. We had a great time with excellent concerts, good food and drink and all at extremely low prices. Our conductor was, of course, Brian Howard and it was his brother, Gordon who arranged the visit for us. Gordon is still in Harare running the Salvation Army Hospital with his wife Catherine and as you all know, Zimbabwe has been going through some tough times in recent years. We wish everyone who we met on that trip good luck for the future. To commemorate this 10 year anniversary we are holding a celebration lunch on Sunday, 29ty March at Forest Hills Golf Club. We have over 40 attending but we can squeeze a few more in if anyone is interested - Tel. 01594 860944. The band is looking to tour again next year (2010). Watch this space for details. | Well, well, well, Lydbrook Band 3rd in the
Championship Section at the West of England Regional Contest. Who would
have believed it - but it was true, 4 Bars Rest said so on Monday morning!
But, were we surprised? I don’t think so, because we all knew that something good was happening but we were too scared to look any further than the next rehearsal. We had some great rehearsals under Steve Sykes and took every bar, every note and every rest apart more than once in the weeks leading up to the contest. Our sincere thanks go to Steve for his professionalism, dedication and musicality in the build up to the contest. This is the best result at the Regional Contest in our 86 year history and follows hot on the heels of our 5th place last year with our Norwegian friend, Tom Brevik at the helm. The band performed very well on the day from a number 11 draw - last band of the day. All the soloists performed admirably and I think we all enjoyed the performance. My personal thanks go to all members who have worked hard during the past month or so and thanks also to all family members and friends for making their commitment possible. So now it’s back down to earth and on with normal rehearsals as we lead up to the Proms Concert and our summer fund raising jobs. Tickets for the Proms are on sale now at £7.00 each and can be obtained by telephoning Barbara on 01594 860944 (Eve), or 860789 (Day). Our guest soloist is the wonderfully talented David Childs, principal euphonium of the Cory Band - the highest ranked band in the world. Finally, congratulations to our Repiano player, Dan Moss who last week passed his audition for the Royal Marines. We are all proud of Dan and we wish him well in his career which begins in September. That’s all for now folks - “WELL DONE THE BAND!”. |

We are now just 6 days away from the area contest at Torquay on Sunday, 15th March. The band, under conductor, Steve Sykes, has been busy rehearsing for the past few weeks on Gilbert Vinter’s “Salute to Youth”, the set test piece. Rehearsals have gone well and as always there is a good atmosphere in the band and a sense of anticipation and excitement as we build to the contest. Last year, under our Norwegian conductor, Tom Brevik, we achieved our highest placing in the area contest with a 5th place and to equal or better that this year would be a great achievement - time will tell!! Elwyn Walford, our band treasurer, has been out of action for a few weeks having had some hospital treatment. He’s coming along well and we hope to see him in the bandroom again soon. Another having had an operation is Sam Davis, one of our young cornet players. Sam is also doing well, but unfortunately will not be fit enough for the weekend contest. Hopefully he will be back at band in the next few weeks. So it’s hard work this week leading up to Torquay and then a week off to get our breath back, get family life back in order and carry out all the mundane tasks put on hold during the past few weeks. I will post another report next week. Robert Morgan |

Stephen Sykes wins BBC Radio 2Young Brass Soloist of the Year
I was lucky enough to be at the event at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester on Saturday evening to hear Stephen’s detailed musical performance of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust” and Philip Wilby’s “White Knuckle Ride”. Stephen has regularly attended rehearsal at Lydbrook with his dad since the age of 14 and it has been a privilege for us to see and hear his development over the years. Stephen’s ambition is to be a professional trombone player and to attend The Guildhall School of Music in London to continue his studies. Everyone at Lydbrook wishes him good luck for the future. The final of the BBC competition can be heard on Radio 2 on Friday, 27th February at 9.30 p.m.

A belated happy New Year to everyone. The band have been very busy since the turn of the year and were pleased to be involved in the concert celebrating the life of Yvonne Walkerdine. It was a great concert with a packed hall; a true sign of Yvonne’s standing in the community. The proceeds were divided between the MacMillan Care Trust and Yorkley Surgery. Yvonne’s husband Rob conducted the band in one of William Rimmer’s great marches, The Black Knight. Unfortunately, due to weather conditions the band found it necessary to withdraw from the Yeovil Contest. Heavy snow in the area the day before made travelling difficult from some of the outer reaches of the Forest of Dean and Stroud valleys. An early start (6.00 a.m.) on the morning of the contest, with temperatures forecast at minus 8°C was considered to be an unacceptable risk for the band members and hence the decision to withdraw. However, we are back at it now and starting on rehearsals for Torquay on March 15th. Salute to Youth (Gilbert Vinter) will be a challenge for the band but hard rehearsals under the baton of Steve Sykes will hopefully have the band in peak condition by the 15th. Tickets are now on sale for the Last Night of the Proms Concert on Saturday, 9th May at the Forest Theatre. Our guest soloist this year will be the internationally renowned euphonium soloist, David Childs, principal euphonium of the Cory Band. Tickets are £7.00 each and reserved seats can be booked with Barbara Morgan on 01594 860944 (Eve) or 860789 (Day). Finally, March sees the 10th anniversary of the band’s “tour of a lifetime” to South Africa and Zimbabwe. A re-union lunch is planned on Sunday, 29th March at Forest Hills Golf Club at 1.00 p.m. for 1.30 p.m. The cost is £12.00 per head for a 3-course lunch. All tour members are invited as well as all current band members and their families. Please contact Robert Morgan (01594 860944) if you would like to attend. That’s all for now. I will try and keep you updated prior to Torquay.

| Just a quick note prior to the Christmas break.
It’s been a very successful year for the band and its members, with some excellent concerts and good contest results. The band had its highest ever finish (5th place) at the West of England Area Contest under Norwegian conductor, Tom Brevik and we also retained the GBBA title, for the fourth year in succession, with conductor, Steve Sykes. We have had some excellent concerts at the Forest Theatre with our Christmas Concert a couple of weeks ago being one of the highlights of our year. The audience were particularly enthusiastic and therefore made the event so much more enjoyable for everyone. It has been a pleasure working with our guest conductors, Tom Brevik, Philip Harper, Ian Holmes, Steve Sykes. They have all contributed to a very successful year for the band and we would like to thank them all for their commitment and enthusiasm. The Training Band has also worked well this year and congratulations go to them for keeping up their standards. Lydbrook Band have always encouraged young people and some have done very well this year with their exams and contest results. They are:- Dan Moss, Sam Davis, Rhiannon Symonds, Jack Neale, Otis Williams, Maizie Morgan and Kate Rogers-Davies (well done also to Sam and Kate for passing their driving test). I would like to thank everyone connected with the band for their help and support during the year. A special thanks to the members for their commitment and dedication and we hope that 2009 will be even more successful. A very Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year to you all. Robert Morgan |

| The band has had another successful week on
the contest scene when both the senior and training band played at the
local Gloucestershire Brass Band Association contest.
Let’s start with the Training Band first. Playing in the unregistered section, the Training Band were awarded a Gold Certificate for their performance of Eric Ball’s “The Young in Heart” and the march “Senlac Abbey”. It was a great show from the band and I was more than happy with their performance. They always seem to rise to the occasion - well done everyone. The next contest for the Training Band will be at Cross Keys on 31st January, 2009. The senior band also had a good day at the GBBA, winning the main contest for the fourth year in succession. The band worked hard with conductor, Steve Sykes on the chosen test piece “Trittico” by James Curnow, as well as the March, “Ravenswood” where we were awarded 2nd prize. Special awards were won by:- Best Percussion Section - Andrew,
Osian & Kate Sunday was also a sad occasion for the band as it was the last contest for Jo (Millin), as she is moving to Devon with partner, Rob Legge. Jo has been a great member of the band during the last 4-5 years and we will miss her both as a player and friend and wish her and Rob good luck for the future. However, we move on and Debbie Galliott will now move from Solo Horn to Solo Baritone, making way for John Jemmett to join on Solo Horn. John has helped us out on a couple of occasions and we look forward to having him as a full time member. Many thanks to Debbie for “volunteering” to fill the solo horn seat over the past seven months. Our Christmas Concert is on Saturday, 13th December and we look forward to working with Philip Harper as our guest conductor. Tickets are available from Barbara Morgan on 01594 860944 and are £7.00 each. Congratulations to Rhiannon Symonds, one of our young trombone stars. At 11 years of age, Rhiannon has just qualified from the preliminary round to go forward to the Regional Final of the Texaco Young Musician of the Year, which will be held on Sunday, 16th November. The contest is for young musicians under 20 years of age and at 11, Rhiannon is the youngest in the competition. We all wish her well at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Finally, it was with great sadness that some of us recently played at the funeral of ex-player Geoff Lawrence. Geoff had been associated with the band for about 25 years and was instrumental in helping with the training of young players in the village. Geoff was still a committee member at the time of his death and he will be sadly missed by us all. Our commiserations go to his wife Elvy, son Terry and daughter Denise. That’s all for now - more news soon.

The summer is here, the weather is mixed and like bands all over the country Lydbrook have started their summer engagement schedule. A very pleasant afternoon was spent in Ross Bandstand last weekend with very good weather and a sizeable crowd in attendance. Our next engagement on 5th July is at Goodrich (about 4 miles from Lydbrook) when the band will play at the opening of the new “green space”. They will perform from 3.30 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. so if it’s a nice afternoon, just turn up and listen to the band. A few of the senior band members and the Training Band will be taking part at the Forest of Dean Solo Contest which takes places on 6th July at Lakers School - good fun this and we look forward to an enjoyable day. Malvern Bandstand is on 13th July from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. – always a good job this in very pleasant surroundings and a good audience is usually in attendance. To draw the month to a close the band will be at their Garden Party at Lydbrook House on Saturday 26th July from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. when they will perform with members of the Training Band. Last year’s event was cancelled owing to the floods - what a terrible couple of weeks. Congratulations to Chris Toomer (Baritone) and Laura on their wedding which took place on 26th May. We wish them well for their future life together. Lydbrook Band, as always, continues to encourage its youngsters into the senior band and during the summer months debuts will be made by Rhiannon Symonds (Trombone), Otis Williams (Cornet), Jack Neale (Horn) and Bethan Jones (Cornet). We hope they all have a long and enjoyable banding career. Congratulations to Kate and Chris following the birth of their son Josh. Mother and baby are doing well I hear, but tough on the dad as normal!! The Training Band gave a very successful concert at Highnam Court on Monday evening when they played at a charity fund raising event for breast cancer. They were joined by Drybrook Ladies Choir and the highly amusing Pam Ayres for a very pleasant evening in the spectacular grounds at Highnam Court. Finally, we are pleased to announce that the Lydbrook Bandsman of the Year award was presented this year to Dan Moss for his contribution to the band following the tragic death of his mum, Kaye, in August last year. The award, in memory of Trefor Evans, was presented at the band’s Proms Concert on 10th May. Tref would have been proud of you Dan; well done. More news later in the Summer. Robert Morgan |

First of all I would like to thank the members of the band for their time, dedication, patience and performance during the week leading up to the contest. It was an inspired decision by the committee to invite Tom Brevik to Lydbrook to conduct the band at the Championships and I’m sure that everyone was inspired by his conducting and musical abilities during the week. His humour also was well received although Brooksy’s humour left most of us scratching our heads; is Paula getting as bad? Thanks also to Anne-Grethe for helping us out on Solo Horn. It was great to have you along and we all hope that maybe you can come back one day with your family and meet up with us again. So there we are, fairly safe in the rankings for another year but something very positive to build on during the next 12 months. We start again on Sunday with Steve Sykes and we look forward to welcoming Steve back to work with us during the summer months. So, well done to everyone - a great day for Lydbrook Band and a great day for us all. Thanks Tom - brilliant! Robert Morgan

Just a short update for the website as we approach the 2007 Area Contest in Torquay when the band will play Eric Ball’s ‘Festival Music’. Rehearsals are going well under our Norwegian Guest Conductor, Tom Brevik and we will, I’m sure, have an enjoyable week working with Tom. Also from Norway we have Tom’s daughter, Anne-Grethe Brevik Amland, who is helping us out while our Solo Horn player, Kate Buffrey is in the last months of her pregnancy. I’m sure the band will go to Torquay with plenty of confidence and hoping for a top half finish. On a personal note I would like to thank everyone in the brass band world from near and far for their congratulations following my nomination for an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours. I have been overwhelmed with the number of congratulations that I have received from bandsmen and women from all over the country. Prince Charles, who presented me with the MBE medal on 28th February, was genuinely interested in the future of brass bands and was very pleased to hear that the banding scene is in a fairly healthy condition. Once again, thanks to everyone and a further update will be posted after the Area Contest. Robert Morgan

| Christmas!!
"When was that?" you are probably asking yourselves.
Well, as normal for the band it was a busy time with Christmas Concerts and carol playing and, of course, we did a lot of fund raising for the band. We now turn our attention to the Area Contest on March 9th in Torquay when we will be playing Eric Ball’s Festival Music – music written in 1964 but still standing the test of time. This weekend we are looking forward to welcoming Tom Brevik from Norway to Lydbrook. Tom will be conducting the band at the contest and preparations start this weekend. In the meantime we have a concert in Lydney on Sunday, 10th February for the Poppy Appeal, along with the Forest of Dean Male Voice Choir and two school choirs. Thanks to everyone who has sent messages and cards following the news of my MBE. It was a big but very pleasant shock and my thanks go to Mary Harris for her time spent making the application and, of course, to all those who supported the application with letters. It’s a bit more recognition for brass bands and Lydbrook Band in particular. I’m just waiting now for the call to the Palace - it’s going to be a very exciting day. Please find on the engagements page a list of events to date for 2008. Robert

New CD to be released by Lydbrook Band..... Lydbrook Band spent the weekend of Dec 1 and 2 recording their latest CD, "A Forest Symphony", at Dene Magna school, in Mitcheldean. The band, conducted by Dave Williams, will be releasing the album in February 2008. The CD features the first recording of "A Forest Symphony", which was written by Forest born composer Gavin Higgins. The piece was originally commissioned for the Voices in the Forest Festival, held at Beechenhurst in June. Voices in the Forest
has partially funded the production of the Lydbrook CD due to the presence
on it of Gavin's work, which was recorded alongside pieces such as "Heart
of Lithuania", which the band performed the British premiere of
at Newland Church, near Coleford, earlier this year. Other pieces featured include euphonium solo "Endearing Young Charms", played by Les Pearse, and soprano solo "Bring Him Home", from Les Miserables, played by Tracey King. Cornet feature "The Tops" and "76 Trombones" have also been recorded, alongside the band's signature march "Lydbrook", written especially for the band by David Morgan in 2003. "With One Look", from Sunset Boulevard, "Shekinah", and the "John Dunbar Theme", from Dances with Wolves complete the recording. Band secretary Robert Morgan said: "The CD should be very entertaining and we look forward to receiving the finished product from the engineers at Dolce Productions early next year. "We had an enjoyable weekend recording it, which should come through in the playing."

A sell out audience enjoyed the concert hosted by Lydbrook Band at the Forest Theatre, Five Acres, to celebrate 50 years of service by band secretary and cornet player Robert Morgan. In what was arguably the finest display of brass soloists ever to play on the same programme at a Forest concert, soprano player Steve Barnsley, tuba soloist Steve Sykes and trombonist Brett Baker took to the stage to perform two solos each. There were vocal
performances of Viljia, from the Merry Widow, and Czardas, Conducting duties for the evening were shared by another long term friend of the band, Brian Howard, and Steve Sykes, and the compere for the evening was former band chairman and player Nigel Morgan. Both the training band, which Robert runs and conducts, and senior band joined together for two numbers, and Robert was presented with his 50 years service pin by fellow band member Yvonne Hamblin, while his 50 year certificate was presented by Gloucestershire Brass Band Association chairman Mike James. Robert's years of service not only to Lydbrook Band but also the banding scene locally, regionally, nationally and internationally were paid tribute to by Lydbrook Band's chairman Trevor Moss. Robert said the evening had more than lived up to his expectations, and thanked everyone who had help to make the event such a success. He said: "I am extremely grateful to our guest soloists and conductors who all made themselves readily available to perform at this special concert. "My thanks also go to the band's president, Mrs Jeanette Street, and her company Allstone Sand and Gravel, for sponsoring the concert, and to our compere Nigel, and both the senior band and training band. "I would finally like to thank my wife Barbara and the rest of my family for their support over the years because without them behind me none of what I have achieved would have been possible." |

Concert
Following the concert on Saturday evening, I would just like to thank everyone for taking part in the event. Of course, all the guest soloists were great as we would expect, and I am very grateful to them all for giving up their time to help me celebrate 50 years with Lydbrook Band. A special mention though for the band, who I thought performed very well during the evening. It was a big concert with well over 2 hours of playing and concentration. Thanks also to our helpers on the night; Mark and Sue on Euphonium, Dave on Horn and Matt on Percussion. As always, it was a pleasure to be joined by Jo, Stephen and Carlton Sykes and our old friend Steve Schramm. It was also good to see such a full hall and the socialising afterwards at the Inn on the Wye was very enjoyable. Once again, thanks to everyone who helped in any way and, of course, our two conductors, Brian Howard and Steve Sykes. I look forward to the next 50 years. Thanks everyone. Robert |

Another successful day was had at the GBBA Contest on Sunday, 14th October. Although there was only a small entry all day there were some closely fought battles between a number of bands. The Training Band started off the day with a good performance of their March and Test Piece. They were awarded a silver certificate by adjudicator, Simone Rebello for their performance. We collected the trophy for the most players under 14 years of age (10) and the Ivor Jordan Memorial Trophy for the youngest player, which went to Stephen East aged 9. As for the A Section, the senior band had an intriguing battle with Cinderford Band under their conductor, Clive Lewis. However, Cinderford won the March and we won the test piece for our performance of Gilbert Vinter’s “Spectrum”. It was a hat-trick of victories for the band at this contest, all of which have been conducted by Steve Sykes. Congratulations to the Percussion section of Rhydian, Osian and Andrew for retaining the percussion prize and to Mark Hadlington (depping for Les) who won the prizes for:- Best Euphonium in Section A Well done Mark and thanks for your help. Thanks also to Kerry Ford and Debbie Galliott from Lydney Band for helping out for the contest. It was greatly appreciated. It was also good to have Jo Sykes and Stuart back with us again and also “old boy” Andy Farrington, after 3 years at University. Our next event is the concert on 27th October - more news about that later in the week.

A message on the guest book from Les, Marie and Thomas all the way from Chicago has prompted me to update the website. As you are all aware the band played at Kaye’s funeral in August and we were all proud to be able to help Trevor, Dan and Rob through such a difficult day in their lives. It’s a strange thing to say, but it was a most uplifting funeral with a packed church and a moving eulogy from Trevor and Rob. Dan played in the band for the hymns and the singing was tremendous in the wonderful old church at Berkeley. Our summer break followed but then straight away it was into rehearsals with Dave Williams for the Cathedral Concert on 15th September with 5 choirs to keep us company. It was a good concert with an excellent audience who enjoyed all the music being performed. We are now in training for the GBBA Contest on 14th October at the Forest Theatre when the band will again be conducted by Steve Sykes. This year is my 50th year with Lydbrook Band and I am organising a concert for band funds on 27th October also at the Forest Theatre. Guest artists include Brett Baker on Trombone from Black Dyke Band, Steve Barnsley on Soprano from Tredegar Band and Steve Sykes on Tuba. To ring the changes the lovely Sue Black will perform some vocal solos in her own special way. Conducting will be Lyndon Baglin, Brian Howard and Steve Sykes. Tickets for the event are £6.00 and can be obtained by ringing Barbara Morgan on 01594 860944. Further details to follow. At the concert last week we sadly said a farewell to Karen Toomer, our first horn player, who later this month sets off on a 12-18 month trip to Australia and New Zealand. Karen has been a great member for many years and we wish her and Jim all the best for their visit down under. News on new members to follow in the next week or so. Robert Morgan |

| News
Update - 6th August
Kaye was a lovely person whose main objective in life was to support her husband and sons in their activities, but of course, she found time to live a very active life of her own. She was a teacher at Berkeley Primary School for over 20 years and was much loved by her pupils and colleagues. She was also a musician and had played the bassoon as well as percussion with Lydbrook Band in the past. Diving though was her main hobby; she loved it and Trevor tells me that Kaye had carried out more than 200 dives. The tragic accident occurred while investigating the wreck of HMS Scylla off Plymouth and it was something she had been really looking forward to for some time. Being Secretary of Lydbrook Band gives you some marvellous highs and some terrible lows and during the past couple of years we have had more than our fair share of sadness. However, the overriding feature of this band is the love, care and understanding that we all have for one another. I’m sure this will shine through again in the next few days and the weeks ahead. Our condolences go to Trevor, Dan and Rob and we will do our best I’m sure to help them through this terribly sad time. Robert

Andrew Manning, who plays cornet in the senior band, won third place in the air varie years 10 - 11 class. Other players taking part in the contest
were Jack Neale, Maize Morgan, Stephen East, Abigail Worgan-Clark, Samuel
Howell, and Claire Howell. Robert Morgan took part in the adult and child duet competition with his granddaughter Maize, and the training band also entered two quartets in the competition. Robert said: "Everyone who competed played very well and was a credit to the band. Our younger members are the future of our band and on their performances at the weekend I think we can safely say the band's future is in good hands." |

| Lydbrook
Band - Press Release “Voices in the Forest” – Saturday 23rd June
Gavin, who hails from the Forest of Dean, started his banding career with Parkend Band before joining Lydbrook Band in 1998. After leaving school he moved on to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Gavin is relishing the opportunity to see his music performed on home turf. He said “I’ve had things performed in London and Manchester before but this is the first big piece I’ve written that will be played locally. It’s exciting.” The piece is very much inspired by his memories of the Dean and said “It’s about the things I find interesting. The Forest is quite a magical and mysterious place. It’s a sort of fantasy piece.” Although an accomplished horn player, Gavin is taking a back seat in the performance of his symphony. He said “Once I’ve written it I just leave it to the performers. It’s out of my hands. I’ve been to the rehearsals and it’s sounding good already. They’re enjoying playing it.” Earlier this year Gavin scooped the Herbert Howells Music Bursary. This autumn he takes up a scholarship at the Royal College of Music where Lydney-born composer Howells studied with Ivor Novello and Ivor Gurney. Among other projects, Gavin is working on film scores. One will be seen in the new animated film Arctic Tale which features the voice of US rapper Queen Latifah. “A Forest Symphony” is in five continuous movements; “Sunrise, The Magical Forest, The Hunt, March of the Woodland Animals and Sunset.” The event is free of charge and starts at 12 noon with Forest Bands and Choirs performing until 4.30 p.m. “A Forest Symphony” will be performed as part of Lydbrook Band’s contribution to the event starting at 2.30 p.m. 20th June

We have had two major events since my 8th March posting - the Area Contest and a visit to Lithuania. Let’s have a look at the Area Contest first. As you all know it was our first time back in the Championship Section since 1998 and only our third time ever. Isaiah 40 was a difficult piece of music and I think that was generally accepted throughout the country. We found it difficult but always challenging and enjoyable. Dave Williams, as always, was a pleasure to work with and we had a great time rehearsing the music. Thanks to everyone for putting in the effort required. A couple of places up the ladder would have been better for us, but from a number one draw we didn’t do too badly. No one was hired in for the contest, it was our own band and we were in the section by the rules of the National Championships, and we are proud of that. Our young players, Lauren, Sam, Rhyddian, Dan and Andrew can only have benefited from the experience and we look forward to next year with added enthusiasm. Lithuania Within a few days we were off to Lithuania again - 6 from the band, plus Derek Barnes, Tref’s sister, Pam and Mark from ‘up t’north’. We really did have a great time and were well looked after by Remi, who made sure that we were kept busy from the time we arrived in Panevezys - a big thank you to Laurynas (Remi’s son) for help with the translating. You had to be there to appreciate the emotions of the presentation. We first had coffee with the Deputy Mayor and Deputy Ambassador before being ushered into the hall where the press were assembled. There were flash lights and TV cameras - we felt like David Beckham!! The curtains were closed on the stage and the words “Trefor Evans Foundation” were projected onto them. Jo and the Deputy Ambassador to the UK, Keith Shannon, were asked to draw the curtains back. Imagine our surprise when we saw the instruments beautifully displayed on the stage, all lit up and looking absolutely brand new. The emotions of those few moments can’t be described in words (well not by me anyway). I think we were all stunned and realised that Tref’s last wish had been achieved. I then had to explain to the press and TV what it was all about, with the help of an interpreter from the City Council. A cheque for £2,000 was also presented to help with the development of their young players. For those who had helped with the cleaning, when the curtain was drawn back the smell of brasso was almost overwhelming!! The Mayor explained that there were currently 8 villages with bands. The instruments we took over would enable another 4 villages to starts new bands and the municipality of Panevezys would provide funds for the teachers.
For Remi to arrange this for us was a lovely thought and proved to us what a great and understanding man he is. We visited about 6 villages, played in the bands with the young people, helped them with a few master classes and had a lot of fun. There was plenty of schnapps and brandy available, if you were that way inclined, but being true bandsmen we didn’t touch a drop!! Thanks to the band members who were able to make the trip; Barb, Paula, Jo, Phil and a special thanks to Chairman, Trevor for his help with the speeches during the trip. Well, there we are; I’ve tried to paint a picture of the visit for you all. Thanks to Jo of course, and everyone who in any way helped with the event.

After many months of hard work by members of the band, the instruments for Lithuania were finally despatched on Sunday, 4th March for Panevezys. A carrier from Lithuania (which had just delivered a load into London) arrived in Lydbrook in the pouring rain to load the instruments. Trumpets, cornets, horns, baritones, euphoniums, trombones and Eb and Bb basses were all packed into boxes and despatched to the City Hall in Panevezys for distribution to the local villages. Many thanks are due to Jo Millin for her hours of hard work, together with other members of the band who assisted with cleaning and repairs. A special thanks to Derek Barnes for his work in the repairs department. A few of the band are off to Lithuania on 15th March for an official hand-over to the Major of Panevezys. It should be an exciting few days and I will give you more news at a later date. Arrangements and rehearsals are well advanced for the Area Contest in Torquay on 11th March. Unfortunately Eb Bass player Andy Shepherd is not too well at the moment. His seat has been taken by Martin Wakely, who has stepped in at the last minute as a replacement and my thanks are due to Martin for volunteering!! We all wish Andy a speedy recovery and look forward to having him back in the band room as soon as possible. Robert

A comment on the guest book from the renowned trombone player, Steve Schramm, has spurred me on into giving you an update on rehearsals for the Area Contest. In fact things have been going pretty well - rehearsals have been generally well attended - work and sickness at this time of year is something that has to be dealt with on a day to day basis. However, Dave Williams has worked extremely hard with the band and has been directing rehearsals since Christmas. Isaiah 40 is indeed a challenge, not only to Lydbrook band I’m sure, but to many others up and down the country. We are enjoying the challenge and are looking forward to our first appearance in the Championship Section for about 8 years. Hopefully I can give you more news a little nearer the date. Robert

As promised, just a short update prior to the end of the year. Generally it’s been a great year for the band from a musical point of view. We have had some good contest results and some excellent concerts in and around the area. It’s been a pleasure to work with our guest conductors - Steve Sykes, Nigel Seaman, John Berryman and David Williams, and a great experience to work with conductors who have different ideas and ways of working with the band. We also have a good local following and our three annual concerts at the Forest Theatre attract very appreciative audiences. We are sometimes super critical of our own performance, but that can only be good and we shall certainly need to work hard next year for our challenges in the Championship Section. We’ve had good rehearsals all year round and my thanks are due to all the band members who sometimes have to perform miracles in order to be at band practice, but the work has paid off and success has come our way. Well done to the Training Band too. They also attend rehearsals regularly and we have had some excellent concert and contest performances. Thanks to all the committee members from the band and also to the general committee members who work hard throughout the year with the fundraising events. Our sad times this year are well documented, but as always we move on. We will never forget Trefor, Ken and David Beard and their contribution to our organisation, but more importantly, they were good friends and they will be missed tremendously. Well, that’s it for now folks. I hope you have a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year and just a reminder that practice starts again on Wednesday, 3rd January.

Well, that’s the end of the contest season and
as always there’s nothing quite like winning, and that’s
exactly what we did at the GBBA contest last weekend.
The day started with the Training Band and how well they performed. We had a number of new members performing for the first time and they included:-
Maizie Morgan, Sam Howell, Stephen East, Alex Isles, Otis Williams, They all did exceptionally well and, of course, they are the band’s future. I wonder how many of them will come through to the senior band - time will tell. The day continued with the main band playing T.J. Powell’s march, “The Contestor” and Goff Richards’ “Voyage of Discovery”. Steve Sykes worked the band hard all week and just because it was the Association Contest, no stone was left unturned. Four rehearsals in the week before the contest had us all on peak form. Excellent performances were given of both pieces and adjudicator Philip Harper was very impressed with the band’s playing and duly awarded us two first prizes, with Marie Pearse winning the best Flugel player of the day. The Percussion section also won the best Percussion of the day and Rhydian Griffiths, Angela Shepherd and Andrew Brooks were more than pleased with their performance, and are looking forward to the challenges of Isaiah 40 at next year’s Area Contest. It’s been a terrific 18 months of contest success for the band with prizes at every contest we’ve entered, including the National Finals. Of course it now gets even more difficult with our promotion to the Championship Section next year, but who knows, we have great camaraderie within the band and if we believe in ourselves, anything is possible. Once again, thanks to Steve Sykes for his hard work and dedication to the band. He’s a terrific person who has the respect of everyone within the band. Our next concert with the band is on Saturday, 16th December at the Forest Theatre, where our guests will be the Forest of Dean Male Voice Choir. Tickets for this event are available from Barbara Morgan on 01594 860789 (Day) and 860944 (Eve) and are priced at £6.00 each. I’ll try and give a final update before Christmas, time allowing. A fairly quiet Autumn programme is in front of the band, which is a nice change from our normal hectic lives. On 7th October we welcomed the Treorchy Choir to a concert at the Forest Theatre. A good audience enjoyed the excellent singing from the choir and the Lydbrook Band Quintet. Members of the quintet were:- Phil Storer - Cornet
& Trumpet Our next event is Wendy and Dave’s wedding on 28th October at the Inn on the Wye, where the quintet will play for the ceremony and the band will perform some “oompah” music for the first part of the evening’s entertainment. Unfortunately the Armistice weekend concert will not take place this year owing to the unavailability of the “Glosters” to help with the organisation. Our next concert with the band is on Saturday, 16th December at the Forest Theatre, where our guests will be the very talented Diamante Choir from Tewkesbury. A lovely group of young ladies whose singing will thrill you all I’m sure. Tickets for this event are available from Barbara Morgan on 01594 860789 (Day) and 860944 (Eve) and are priced at £6.00 each.

Finals A creditable 5th place in the National Championships of Great Britain is a great achievement. It means the 5th best 1st Section band in the country (England, Wales & Scotland) - a great achievement for our proud village band. Drawn to play 17, the last of the competing bands, we put on an excellent performance which just fell away a touch in the last minute or so. One adjudicator commented that we seemed to “sound tired” and I’m sure he was correct, when you think that we were on the go from 7.30 in the morning until we actually took the stage at 8.15 in the evening. The band was conducted and trained for the occasion by Steve Sykes on Major Peter Parkes’ arrangement of Gustav Holst’s ‘Ballet Music from The Perfect Fool’. I’m sure that everyone in the band would like to join me in thanking Steve for his hard work and dedication to the rehearsals and performance and we look forward to our next project together. A special mention is due to all our young players who performed so well and worked hard before the event.
Sam Davis on Repiano They were all players at their first National Finals and were a credit to themselves and their families. A word too for the soloists - congratulations to everyone for such great performances and especially to Marie, named as our star player by 4 bars rest. A special mention also for Jo on Baritone - it’s been a difficult week for Jo but she played brilliantly and did her bit for Tref’s memory. The contest was deservedly won by Kibworth who were conducted by John Berryman. Congratulations from us all to John and the band. Many congratulations also to Bream Band who came 5th in the 4th Section out of an entry of 22 bands. So there we are; a successful visit to the Nationals. Congratulations to everyone and we look forward to our challenge in the Championship Section next year. Robert

Sunday, 24th September
Rehearsals are going well and it’s a great feeling to have a full band at rehearsals. Everyone is keen and raring to go. The dedication from all players at this time is something to be admired. You move heaven and earth to be at band practice and how some of you manage it with your family commitments, goodness only knows. I think we have done everything we can at this stage and we are now relying on Steve Sykes to get us up to standard for next Sunday’s competition. It should be a good weekend - it’s what we all aspire to - it’s our cup final and we’re going to enjoy it. Robert Morgan |

As we come towards the end of the summer we can reflect
a little on the highs and lows of the past few months.
The highs include a 2nd Prize at the regional contest, qualification to the National Championships and promotion to the Championship Section from 1st January next year. This was followed by our very successful tour to Latvia and Lithuania, which was enjoyed by us all. Then we have the lows - the sad passing of Trefor - our band Vice President, David Beard and then a couple of months later, our band President, Ken Beard (David’s dad). As always, the band did what they needed to do, providing music for all the funerals, plus the music for Barb’s mum’s funeral. Kath had been a great supporter of the band for many years and a few players made it to Welsh Newton to play for the hymns. Thanks are due to Brian Howard for conducting us at the funerals of Ken, David and Kath. Jo tells me that Tref’s Trust Fund is progressing well, with over 50 instruments now collected and donations of over £3,500. Thanks are due to all those who played at Frocester Beer Festival (arranged by Frampton Band and Brian Ireland) and for everyone agreeing to donate the fee to Trefor’s Trust Fund (www.treforevans.co.uk). Well done Jo, keep up the good work. The National Finals, Harrogate September 24th is fast approaching and the next 3 weeks are going to be hectic to say the least. Ten rehearsals are arranged with Steve Sykes plus sectional rehearsals, as we try to get to grips with Gustav Holst’s Ballet Music from “The Perfect Fool”, arranged by Peter Parkes. The band will depart Lydbrook on Saturday, 23rd at 9 a.m. and head towards Brighouse where they will spend the night, before proceeding to Harrogate on Sunday morning for the afternoon contest. It will be a late night, with us probably getting back to Lydbrook after midnight. I’ll try and post an update at a later date. Robert Morgan |

David
Morris
David Morris’ roots lie in playing the cornet from the age of 13, subsequently he played principal cornet and in 1975 became the Cornet Champion of Great Britain. He has performed with the highly acclaimed Kings Of Brass & Virtuosi Brass of Great Britain & was Musical Director with many Northern Bands leading them to National competition Finals and Championships. Long before David started playing the cornet in Saddleworth where he has lived all his life, it was his whistling that first caught the ear of his music teacher, innocently whistling in the back of the car he was completely unaware of what his teacher had noticed – he had perfect pitch and great style. Through his experience with brass bands and the technique he used playing the cornet David whistled occasionally as a party piece, this lead to a demand for bookings & he was subsequently persuaded to record his first CD ‘Whistling Down the Wind’ a collection of old English ballads, brass classics and operatic arias with brass band backing. Last year David released his 2nd CD “ World Champion Whistling” and both are on sale tonight or available via www.davidmorris-whistler.com). David won the title of” World
Whistling Champion” at the USA Global event in April 2003. Following
his success in the States he “ turned pro “ and is now in
demand as a whistling soloist and after dinner entertainer. David has
returned to the USA 4 times as soloist in concerts and in March last
year was invited to perform in New Zealand in Auckland and Wellington.

Easter
- A Time To Reflect |
|||||
It’s certainly been a roller coaster ride for the members and friends of Lydbrook Band over the past 4 weeks. It seems like an age really with so much taking place. Let’s have a look back - the Area Contest in Torquay was, of course, the first event on March 18th. A fine performance on the day under conductor John Berryman saw the band qualify for the National Finals with 2nd place behind the winners, Helston Town from Cornwall. Confirmation has now been received that the band will also be promoted to the Championship Section from 1st January, 2007. No sooner had we celebrated our win and we were off on our tour to Latvia and Lithuania where we enjoyed 5 days hospitality from our new friends in the Baltics. Four concerts were given in total, of which two were absolutely astounding with very enthusiastic audiences. The standard of playing by the band was excellent and a special mention must go to our euphonium soloist, Les Pearse, who finished up signing autographs - whatever next!! The band was conducted on the tour by Steve Sykes who was also guest soloist at the concerts. Steve was responsible for the band’s high standard of playing and his solo playing was much admired by the youngsters from the host countries. I’m sure we would like to visit again if we have the opportunity. We had a great time and thanks are due to Piet, Remi and Jannis for their excellent organisation. And then we came home and back to earth with a thunderous bump when we heard the devastating news about Tref, who died less than 24 hours after our return. The immediate shock was devastating and that first band practice the following Sunday will stick in our minds for ever. A death in the family (and bands like Lydbrook certainly are extended families) take some getting over. We shall all remember Tref with affection for years to come. However, as always, the band rallied round and together with our friends from Newtown Band we provided the music at Tref’s funeral in Newtown. I was not able to be there myself owing to an unexpected hospital “holiday”, but I was extremely proud of our band and their efforts to be in Newtown on the afternoon of the 7th April. The loss of one of your players certainly puts life into perspective doesn’t it - it makes you realise how precious life is and how unimportant contests are. We’ll never replace Tref - okay we will get another solo horn player, but Tref was special and will remain in our thoughts for many years to come. Our thoughts are with Tref’s family and of course, Jo, who bravely turned up at band practice last night - well done Jo. Our thoughts now turn to Harrogate for the National Finals and the hard work associated with this event. We still need a couple of weeks to recover from the shock, but then we will do what Lydbrook Band is good at - rally round and move forward - never forgetting - but always striving to be better and stronger. My personal thanks to Chairman, Trevor Moss for his help during my time in hospital - you’ve been great mate - thanks a lot. Have a good Easter - more news in a few weeks. Robert

Our
Friend Tref

|||||
To Jo and all Tref’s family we extend our sincere condolences and support at this sad time. Tref came to Lydbrook in May 1997 and over the years made the solo horn chair his own. He soon became a committee member and would often volunteer to carry out jobs that no one else wanted. Tref was a “doer” not a talker and was certainly a man to get the job done. His playing standard was of the highest level, his attendance second to none and being a tall chap, always looked resplendent in his band uniform. Tref and Jo were a good partnership - they looked out for each other and Jo knew exactly how to look after Tref. The last 6 months had been a proud time for Tref - wins at Wychavon, GBBA, Porthcawl and qualification to the National Finals two weeks ago were just about all that mattered to him. He wore the Lydbrook badge with pride. Come Sunday night’s band practice somehow we will have to share our emotions and try and move forward. It will be difficult I know, but try we must. To Jo, what can we say - we will give you all the support we can over the next few weeks and months and try to help you through this very difficult time. We’ll all miss you ‘ol’ mate’ - rest in peace. Robert P.S. If you
would like to put together a few words on your memories of Tref, please
do so on the band’s guest book. |

The following is an extract from 4BarsRest - click here to see the full report. For the second time in a week, John Berryman conducted a band into a qualification spot for Harrogate. Lydbrook played number ten on the day (a cracking draw for them) and never really sounded in trouble. John Berryman engineered more energy into the performance than any other MD and the quality of sound was superb with dynamic contrast and a real sense of mystery about the performance as well. All of the soloists played well, in particular the soprano who was one of just five sops that hit the top ‘C' cleanly, whilst the horn cadenza was the best of the day. The principal trombone drafted in late during the week also did a fine job, whilst the basses were also in good form. Come the end of the performance, it was as clear as crystal that it would be in the frame and should qualify and whilst they may have been a touch of disappointment to finish second, qualification for the finals was the number one priority. West of England Area Contest The band continued their remarkable run of success on the weekend when they gained the runners up prize in the West of England Regional Championships in Torquay. A good performance of Voyage of Discovery by Goff Richards was produced on the day, with excellent contributions from all the soloists. Thanks are also due to Andy France who stepped in two days before the contest, following a bout of flu suffered by principal trombone, Linda Purvis. And so it’s off to the finals at Harrogate in September and, of course (I nearly forgot) we will also get promotion to the Championship Section from 1st January next year. What a great last 6 months for us all - Training Band as well. Robert Morgan |

Porthcawl Contest Another weekend, another contest and another victory; all a bit unreal to be honest, but enjoyable none the less. Travelling to Porthcawl last Saturday, 18th February, we were the only English band in a strong field of 10 bands. Competing against most of the Welsh top bands we finished 6th overall, but won the prize we entered for - the highest First Section band. The prize money of £300 was very welcome, but like all band contests, the money is just the “icing on the cake”, the victory being the most important. Steve Sykes was once again at the helm and the band produced a solid performance of their programme. Principal Euphonium Les Pearse gave an excellent rendering of ‘Carnival of Venice’ and must have been very close to winning the prize for the best soloist of the day. The contest was won by Tredegar Band, with Tongwynlais in second place and BTM third. It’s heads down now for the Area Contest in Torquay where the band will be conducted by John Berryman and in any spare time we have, the programme for our tour to Latvia and Lithuania starting on March 23rd, will be receiving full attention. Four wins in a row - must be a record for Lydbrook Band - let’s enjoy it while our luck’s in.

We will be leaving Lydbrook early on the morning of the 23rd for a 9.30 a.m. flight from Heathrow to Riga in Latvia. Following a concert and an overnight stay in Riga we will then travel down to Panevezys in Lithuania and play in the Gala Concert of the first Lithuanian Brass Band Championships. Another concert will follow on Sunday before our return home on Monday, 27th March. The band will be conducted by Steve Sykes, who will also appear as guest soloist for the Gala Concert. Unfortunately a few of our own members are not available for the tour; Sam Davis, Lauren Howell and Rhydian Griffiths, plus teacher Chris Toomer; all busy with exams and school work. Hopefully they will all be available for our next tour. More details will be posted as they become available.

MORE SUCCESS FOR LYDBROOK BAND Sunday, 12th February was the day the band completed the “hat trick” - three first prizes at successive contests. Let’s be absolutely clear on this - winning a contest any day is difficult, but to win three “on the trot” is pleasing to say the least. The GBBA Entertainments Contest took place at the Forest Theatre, Five Acres where adjudicator, Stan Lippeatt, awarded the band first prize from a small but strong field of bands. Runners up were Swindon Band, with City of Bristol third and Lydmet Lydney coming in fourth. The band also won the trophy for the most entertaining programme of the day. This was from 15 bands in all four sections. Once again the band was conducted by Steve Sykes, whose meticulous attention to detail no doubt impressed the adjudicator. Earlier in the day the Training Band gave another fine performance in the unregistered section, finishing a very creditable second from the much more mature Marshfield Band. These youngsters really rise to the challenge and although five players short due to holidays, the band once again performed to a very high standard. The senior band is off contesting again this week when they take part in the South Wales Miners Eisteddfod in Porthcawl. Most of the Welsh “big guns” are out this weekend in a section of 11 bands, combining Championship and First Section. The adjudicator is Roy Roe and we all look forward to an interesting day at the seaside.

There’s nothing like a win to spur you into action and update the band website, and what a great win it was. Competing at the Wychavon Festival of Brass at Pershore on Sunday, 2nd October, the band was awarded 1st prize out of a strong field of 10 bands from the Midlands and Wales. And just to put the icing on the cake, euphonium soloist Les Pearse was awarded the prize for the best soloist of the day by adjudicator John Berryman. It’s been a roller coaster couple of weeks for the band with a number of bouts of sickness striking down various players and affecting rehearsals. However, preparation was not affected too much and a good performance was achieved on Sunday. Sincere thanks are due to “old boy” Nigel Howard who stepped in to help out on Trombone at the last minute and to Steve Ruck on cornet and tuba player Carlton Sykes, making his first ever appearance at a band contest. Of course all good performances come from the inspiration and enthusiasm of the conductor and Sunday’s performance was no exception, the band having engaged the experienced Steve Sykes to conduct them. Steve’s attention to detail is second to none and it’s true to say that he inspired the band to one of their best performances in recent years. Thanks Steve, it’s been a pleasure once again to work with you and to meet up with Joanne, Stephen, Carlton and yourself again. And so we move on - a concert at St. Matthews Church in Stroud is the next engagement, when the band will be conducted by Nigel Seaman, principal tuba of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. It’s many years since Nigel conducted the band and we’re looking forward to his visits during the next couple of weeks. Concerts are booked at the Forest Theatre, Five Acres for Saturday, 12th November and again we will be joined by members of the Forest of Dean Branch of the Gloucester Regiment for our annual Remembrance Concert. It starts at 7.00 p.m. and tickets are available at the door. Saturday, 17th December sees us back at the Theatre again for our annual Christmas Concert when our guests will be the Chepstow Male Voice Choir with our old friend Brian Howard conducting. Tickets are £5.50 each and available from Barbara Morgan on 01594 860789 (Day) and 860944 (Eve). It was good to get back to Kingsholm recently, providing the pre-match entertainment for Gloucester Rugby Club. Hopefully we will be performing at a number of home matches in the future with our new bass drummer “Ludo” alias Chris Toomer, who managed to get a mention in the club programme the following week. Well, that’s it for now. As I said at the beginning, there’s nothing like a win to give you some inspiration and this one at Pershore will keep us going on high octane for a few weeks to come yet. Robert Morgan, Secretary |

Band held its annual, and ever popular, Last Night of the Proms concert
at the Forest Theatre, Five Acres, on Saturday. (May 14)
The band played to a capacity audience and, with compere Nigel Morgan, shared the stage with a variety of guest artistes.
Steve, who has conducted
the band on several occasions in the past, agreed to step into the breech
and still managed to wow the audience with virtuoso performances of
solos El Cumbanchero, by Rafael Hernandez, and He Wipes the Tear from
Every Eye, by Don Morrison. Steve was not the
only member of the Sykes family to dazzle the audience as both his sons
Stephen, 14, and Carlton, 12, took to the stage for solo performances
as well. Stephen, playing the trombone, performed Roy Newsome's Tenor
Trombone Rag, while Carlton, following in his father's footsteps on And as if proof
were needed that musical talent is in the Sykes family gene, Steve's
wife Joanne joined the family on cornet to perform a quartet with band
accompaniment of William Himes' When I Think About Jesus. Also performing
during the evening was vocal soloist Sue Black who, with accompaniment
from Rose Lewis, sang Bizet's Habanera from Carmen, and Gounod's Waltz
Song from Romeo and Juliet. The band's programme
was itself varied, with classical pieces such as Gymopodie No. 1, by
Erik Satie, and French Military March, by Saint-Saens, being performed
alongside contemporary music such as that from the Lord of the Rings,
by Howard Shore and arranged by Andrew Duncan. The programme ended
with the usual patriotic renditions of Jerusalem, by Hubert Parry, Fantasia
on British Sea Songs, by Henry Wood, and Pomp and Circumstance, by Elgar. Sharing the stage
with the band, and singing along in fine voice with Sue Black and the
audience for the final numbers were the Springfield Singers and pupils
from Soudley School. Band secretary Robert
Morgan said: "Our Proms concert is our most popular and successful
concert of the year and this year's concert more than lived up to expectations.
The performances by Stephen and Carlton Sykes were particular highlights
and I am sure we are going to be hearing much more |

First of all apologies to all our readers for not receiving information about the band activities just recently. Our web-master Martin, has been moving house (I think the kitchen is finished now) and the secretary has had a couple of very busy months. The band completed a fairly busy summer of activities with a concert in Stratford Park, Stroud on a very beautiful and hot summer day on Sunday, 1st August. However, the week before the band was privileged to play at the wedding of euphonium player, Kate Nelmes and Chris Buffrey at The Abbey Hotel, Tintern. Again we were blessed with a lovely day. A quartet of Stuart Pollard, Marie Pearse, Trefor Evans and Mandy Norman played before the service, while baritone player and bridesmaid Karen Toomer played the keyboard to accompany Kate's sister Lucy, who sang a beautiful solo. The new Mrs. Buffrey, together with her dad, Brian and guests from BTM, Black Dyke and YBS Bands joined in the playing after the ceremony before a very enjoyable afternoon and evening relaxation. Congratulations to Kate and Chris and we all wish them a successful and happy married life. Probably the hottest day of the year (Sunday, 5th September) saw the band recording a CD of Christmas music at Bishopswood Village Hall. It is hoped that the CD will be available from mid-November at a cost of £6.00. Ideal Christmas presents!! The Treorchy Male Choir were our guests on Saturday, 18th September at the Forest Theatre, Five Acres for an excellent concert. The hall was packed to the rafters and the choir was again on great form. Lydbrook Band's quintet made its first public appearance during the concert and were enjoyed by the audience and choir alike. The members were:- Cornet/Trumpet
- Stuart Pollard & Phil Storer We hope to hear more of them in the future. On Sunday, 20th September the band competed at the Wychavon Festival of Brass. Playing last of 10 bands we finished joint 4th under the baton of guest conductor, Wayne Rushton. The band played well considering the adjustments we had to make owing to holidays and congratulations to Kate and Mandy for their work on euphonium. Thanks also to Jo Millin for helping out on baritone and Bob Toomer on percussion. Forthcoming events include the following:- Sunday, 10th October at 2.00 p.m. the Training Band will be performing in the Festival of Brass at Lakers School, Five Acres, organised by the Gloucestershire Brass Band Association. If you would like to support the Training Band and the other two bands taking part, the entry is free and the event should last about 2-2½ hours. The year we have a change to our annual Remembrance weekend concert. For the first time for 35 years the concert will not be held on Armistice Sunday but on Saturday, 13th November at the Forest Theatre, Five Acres. Under the banner of "The Forest of Dean's Festival of Remembrance" the band will organise the event in conjunction with the Forest of Dean Branch of the "Glosters" Regiment. Proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Tickets are unreserved at £4 each and can be obtained from Barbara Morgan on 860789 (work), 860944 (home), or from members of the "Glosters" Forest of Dean Branch. A number of standards from the Forest of Dean will be presented and the Act of Remembrance will be led by the Rev. Andrew Jones (Chaplain to the Regiment). The Christmas Concert will take place at the same venue on Saturday, 11th December when our guests will be the "Wye Valley Swing Jivers". Not to be missed and an excellent evening of Christmas entertainment is promised. Tickets are £5.50 for reserved seats and again can be purchased from Barbara Morgan on 860789 or 860944. Last but by no means least, the band is proud to announce the appointment of their new Resident Conductor, Rhodri Griffiths, who took up his position on 1st September. The band look forward to working with Rhodri and a profile of his banding career is shown elsewhere on our website. We welcome messages in our guest book, providing of course they are not rude, and we look forward to contributions from interested bandsmen and band supporters everywhere.

2004 Proms Night The 2004 Proms night was again a very successful event for the band. About 350 people were in the audience to hear some fine playing by the band under their guest conductor, Wayne Rushton. The highlight of the evening was, of course, the band's guest soloist David Morris - the Grand Master World Whistling Champion. His unique ability was appreciated by band and audience alike and his repertoire included Czardas, Post Horn Galop, Trumpet Triplets, Londonderry Air and The Sunshine of Your Smile. David and his wife Helen spent an enjoyable weekend in the Forest of Dean as guests of Harold & Pauline Moore, members of the band's general committee. The audience rose to the occasion, enjoying their annual singalong to I Vow To Thee My Country, Jerusalem, Fantasia on British Sea Songs and, of course, Land of Hope & Glory with 3 encores. A special thanks to Wayne Rushton for his hard work with the band, which proved to be most enjoyable. We hope to work with Wayne again in the near future. All in all an excellent event and a pleasant hour or so spent in The Anchor at Lydbrook socialising and chatting to our guest soloist. This weekend sees the band in Droitwich Park from 2.30 p.m. until 4.30 p.m., before setting off to the Whit Friday March Contest on 4th June - more details at a later date.

The band put on a good performance of Coventry Variations under conductor David Williams, which although not completely error free, was satisfying to band and audience alike. We would all like to thank Dave for his hard work and enthusiasm during the past couple of weeks. We have enjoyed some excellent rehearsals under Dave's guidance. Well done also to the young players in the band making their debut at the event:- Sam Davies on 3rd
Cornet It's good to see the band's training policy starting to pay off, with young people coming through from the training band. Hopefully in the next couple of years we will see even more young people taking up their seats in the senior band. We now start all over again with a plan of action towards next year's area contest when the band will be challenging for promotion to the Championship Section. Finally, congratulations to the Forest of Dean bands who have qualified for the National Finals; Pillowell and Drybrook in the Fourth Section and Forest of Dean Brass in the Second. We wish them well at the finals in Harrogate. Our next event is the "Last Night of the Proms" Concert on 15th May at the Forest Theatre, Five Acres when our guest will be David Morris, the World Whistling Champion. Tickets are £5 each and can be obtained from Barbara Morgan (01594 860944). We don't have too many world champions performing in the Forest of Dean so don't miss this opportunity for some first class entertainment.

Lydbrook Training Band Lydbrook Training Band has been working hard since the new year in preparation for the Gwent Music Festival which took place last Saturday at Crosskeys. Their hard work was rewarded when they were placed 4th from an entry of 12 bands. The contest is unique for youth bands in that up to 7 adults can be used, making the event accessible to more bands than normal. Special thanks to solo trombone Lauren Howell, for a fine rendition of her solo 'The Sunshine of Your Smile'. The band's conductor, Robert Morgan, was extremely pleased with the result, but more importantly the performance, suggesting that the band seemed to have 'turned a corner' with the performance, with some excellent quiet playing and a sense of maturity throughout. The training band's next event is at the Forest of Dean College on Sunday, 15th February where, along with the senior band, they will compete in the GBBA Entertainments Contest.
On Thursday night, January 28th, one of the coldest nights of the winter, the band were engaged by the Gloucester City Council to perform at Kingsholm, the home of Gloucester Rugby Club. The occasion was the presentation of the 'Freedom of the City' accolades to Gloucester Rugby World Cup men, Phil Vickery, Andy Gomersall and Trevor Woodman. Twenty two of the band turned up for the 5.30 p.m. start and what an enjoyable night it was. First of all we had the official council meeting to agree the awards and then plenty of time for photographs and autographs from Gloucester's 'Famous Three'. The girls in the band seem particularly excited all evening - goodness knows why! Rhydian Griffiths, the band's percussionist, persuaded Phil Vickery into signing the bass drum and finally, 9 members of the band managed to talk their way into the bar and have their photograph taken with the Rugby World Cup (watch the website for the photo's). A great evening this; very cold, but one to remember for many years to come, especially as we were also shown on National TV playing England's anthem 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot'. An excellent concert was given by the band at St. Matthews Church, Cainscross last Saturday evening in a fund raising event for the church's new lighting scheme 'Give Us Light'.
The band will be taking part in the GBBA Entertainments Contest on Sunday, 15th February where they will be conducted by their old friend Brian Howard. After that it's 'heads down' for the area contest in Torquay on Saturday, 27th March where the band have engaged David Williams to conduct. David, who was brought up in the Forest of Dean and played for Coleford Band, went on to become one of the country's finest tenor horn players and was for many years with the Morris Motors Band in Oxford before joining the Sun Life Stanshawe Band in Bristol. He was conductor of the Flowers Band in Gloucester for many years before taking over the baton at Aldbourne. We all look forward to an enjoyable few weeks with Dave rehearsing Bramwell Tovey's 'Coventry Variations'. Last week a few of the band and its committee members attended the funeral of retired member, Bob Morgan, dad of Nigel, Nick, and Richard, all bandsmen themselves. Bob played Eb Bass in the band for a number of years in the 70's and 80's before hanging up his bass. However, he always took a keen interest in the band and was a great supporter of Nigel, who now conducts Tewkesbury Band. Our sympathy goes to his wife Daphne, daughters Joy and Louise and of course, to Nigel, Nick and Richard. Robert Morgan, Secretary

| As 2003 draws
to a close we can reflect on a very interesting and exciting 80th Anniversary
for the band (1923-2003). We have had some excellent concerts at the Forest Theatre, Five Acres as well as a very successful concert for "The Lions" at Chippenham. On top of this, of course, we have had the annual run of summer events to keep the band solvent as well as a very busy Christmas period. We are one of the few bands who still try and go out on Christmas morning. We managed to muster 9 players this year and had a very pleasant stroll down through the village of Lydbrook in very mild weather. But, of course, the highlights of the year have been our two special 80th Anniversary events. First of all the tour to Hungary in May was extremely successful, thanks to Rayburn Tours who did a fine job for us in organising the event. The weather was hot, the beer cheap and the concerts very successful, and, of course, there was "that" thunderstorm which we will always remember. The re-union dinner in October was well supported by present and ex-band members and their respective partners. Sonar Brass provided the entertainment and our guest speaker was Brian Howard. A lot of time was spent reminiscing - and why not? Contest results during the year have been mixed, like always, but generally we have been satisfied with our performances. The band has welcomed several new players during the year:- Phil Storer - on the
front row All have settled in well and we hope they enjoy their time with the band. Once again the band is grateful to its sponsors and other companies who support the band in many ways, with a special thanks to our band President, Ken Beard and his wife Marjorie for their continued support and interest, and to Anthony & Phil Lowther for their sponsorship of the Proms Concert. I'm sure that 2004 will prove interesting, although no tours are planned this year. However, major projects include the purchase of two new baritones, upgrading of the timpani and new walking out blazers and ties. Concerts will be in abundance with quite a few already booked. We have a visit by the world famous Treorchy Male Voice Choir in September as well as the World Whistling Champion, David Morris, as our guest at the Proms Concert on 15th May. A visit to the Whit Friday March Contest is planned for Friday, 4th June as well as the usual round of contests during the year. Concert tickets can be obtained from Barbara on 01594 860944 at home, or 01594 860789 at work. On behalf of the band thank you all for your support and a very Happy New Year to everyone reading this article. Robert Morgan, Secretary |

| The
Reunion Dinner, 25th October |
|||||
| The reunion
dinner held as part of the band's 80th Anniversary celebrations was attended
by 90 of the band's players, committee members, and supporters, both past
and present. The event, held at the Forest Hills Golf Club, near Coleford, on Saturday October 25, made for a highly enjoyable evening, giving many the opportunity to reminisce with old friends they had not seen for many years. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was the band's chairman Trevor Moss and after grace led by the band's vice president Brian Morgan a delicious three course meal was enjoyed by all. Guest speaker, and much respected former conductor, Brian Howard then gave an entertaining speech and raised a toast to the band. The band's stalwart secretary Robert Morgan followed with a speech containing a potted history of the band, from its beginnings in 1923 as the Lydbrook Reed and Brass Band. Robert recounted many of the band's ups and downs, including the rise of the band from the third to the championship section under the baton of one of the band's most famous exports Lyndon Baglin. Other notable highs were the band's second placing in the championship section of the National Finals in 1994, under the leadership of Brian Howard. And more recently the band's most memorable times have been its tours to South Africa and Zimbabwe, Holland and Hungary. A toast to the band's president Ken Beard and to regular sponsors P J Lowther and Sons and Allstone Sand and Gravel rounded off Robert's contribution and everyone sat back for the evening's musical entertainment. Sonar Brass, comprising of Shaun Crowther on Tuba, Ower Farr on Horn, Nick Hudson on Trombone, Alan Morrison and Richard Marshall on cornet, performed a varied programme that fully displayed its members outstanding musical and technical abilities. Of particular note were a superb rendition of Gershwin's 'Someone to Watch Over Me', and a performance of Mozart's 'Turkish Rondo'. The evening rounded off with a disco, giving everyone a further opportunity to chat with old friends and visit a display of memorabilia and old photographs depicting the band's various members over the years. Special thanks to Robert and Barbara Morgan for organising the truly memorable evening. Thanks to Kate Nelmes for the above report |

We are now looking forward to our 80th Anniversary Re-union Dinner at Forest Hills Golf Club, Coleford on Saturday 25th October. Nearly 100 people are attending including many players who were band members in the 50's. Our President, Mr. Ken Beard will be attending with his wife Marjorie, together with a number of our band sponsors. Weather permitting we'll have a photograph taken at the start of the evening - watch out for this on the website in the near future. A great deal of memorabilia will be on show, to include old photographs, programmes and press cuttings and hopefully within the next week or so we'll have a report on the evening's events. The cabaret concert at The Paddocks was a great success with the diners more than happy with our entertainment. In fact the audience at the concert in Trowbridge and at The Paddocks were superb. Tickets are now on sale for the Remembrance Sunday Concert at the Forest Theatre, Five Acres which we are organising in conjunction with the Forest of Dean Branch of the Royal Gloucester, Berkshire & Wiltshire Regiment. Proceeds will go to the British Legion Poppy Appeal. This is the Forest of Dean's "Royal Albert Hall" Remembrance Service. If you would like a ticket contact Barbara Morgan on 01594 860789 (work), or 01594 860944 (Home). Tickets are £4.00 each. The same contact will get you tickets for the Christmas Concert on Saturday December 13th, again at the Forest Theatre, Five Acres. Our guests will be the Chepstow Male Voice Choir, conductor Brian Howard. It will be good to have Brian back with the band - more details in a couple of weeks. Tickets are £5.00 each. Following the National Finals on Saturday last we would like to offer our congratulations to two of our past members. First of all to Nick Walkley (our ex-Principal Cornet), who with his new band Fairey F.P. (Music) won the contest from a number 19 draw. Well done Nick. It was also good to see his dad Steve, an ex-conductor of Lydbrook Band, in the audience supporting his son and wearing his Fairey Band tie. Steve, of course, played solo trombone for the Fairey Band for a few years. Secondly, congratulations to Steve Barnsley, our soprano player for a number of years in the 90's. Although Steve's band, Buy As You View Cory were placed 3rd, Steve was awarded the title of Best Soloist of the Day - a well deserved award for Steve following not only his outstanding performance at the Royal Albert Hall, but also a few weeks ago at the British Open in Birmingham when his playing was again superb. It's been a busy few weeks for the band, starting off with the Wychavon Entertainments Contest in Pershore on 28th September. Although we were not in the prizes the band and M.D. Kevin White, were generally pleased with the performance. The band has had quite a few changes in the past few months and as all band people know, it takes some time to settle down. However, a full combination of players is now in place (except for solo trombone - see vacancies) and we now start our run in to the area contest on 27th March next year, again in Torquay. Last Saturday, 4th October, the band returned to Trowbridge for a very enjoyable concert for the local Lions Club. I'm sure all the band would agree that it was an excellent concert and we would like to take the enthusiastic audience to all our events! Solos were performed by Stuart Pollard, cornet and Tracey King, soprano and first concert appearances were made by Andy Farrington (2nd cornet), Sam Davies (3rd cornet) who has joined from the Training Band, Rhydian Griffiths on percussion, Philip Storer on the front row and Mandy Norman on 1st Baritone, who has just moved into the area from Winchester where for many years she played with the Winchester band. This weekend the band is on duty at the Paddocks Hotel at Symonds Yat to give a cabaret concert for one of our major sponsors, Phil Lowther of A.J. Lowther & Son Ltd. We look forward to an exciting evening. Finally, the band re-union dinner will take place on Saturday, 25th October at the Forest Hills Golf Club, Coleford. A few seats are still available -contact Robert Morgan on 01594 860789 (work) or 01594 860944 (home). To celebrate the band's 80th anniversary a good gathering of friends who played in the band from the 50's through to the present day will be attending. Sonar Brass will provide a musical cabaret from 9.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m., but the organising committee have allowed plenty of time for 'reminiscing'. We are pleased that Brian Howard has agreed to be our guest speaker for the evening. |
