02 February 2016 - February Update

It’s February already - where did January go to I wonder!

So if it’s February it’s ‘Area Contest’ time again for bands all over the country and we are busy working with our conductor for the regionals, Glyn Williams, principal euphonium of the world famous Cory Band.

The music chosen for this year’s contest is ‘Cambridge Variations’ by Philip Sparke and we are gradually getting to grips with the challenges of another test piece.

We have a number of exciting projects in the pipeline this year including ‘Sun, Moon and Stars’ on 16th April at Bristol Cathedral (click here for details).  The band will perform a special arrangement of ‘Silver Rose’ by our composer-in-residence, Liz Lane to include the University of the West of England (UWE) Singers and the South West Open Youth Orchestra.  ‘Silver Rose’ was originally composed for brass band and narrator and on this occasion the poems of Isaac Rosenberg will be narrated by actor Barry Farrimond.  The musical director, creator and organiser of Sun, Moon and Stars is our band's principal conductor Ian Holmes.

During May the band will be taking part in this year’s Wye Valley River Festival.  The Training Band will be performing on The Tump at Lydbrook on Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May and the senior band in Chepstow on Sunday 15th May - details to be announced soon.

Our next event at the Forest Theatre, Five Acres will be on Saturday 11th June for the Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration Concert at 7 pm.  Tickets are £9.00 each and will be available after 1st March from Barbara Morgan on 01594 860944.
