07 July 2016 - News Update

It’s been a busy time for the band once again during the spring and summer.  A very successful and special concert was given at Bristol Cathedral in April, together with the South West Open Youth Orchestra and the University of the West of England Choir.  It was a fantastic evening that everyone at Lydbrook was proud to be part of.

Special thanks to Liz Lane for the new version of ‘Silver Rose’ and, of course, to our principal conductor, Ian Holmes who directed the whole event with his usual aplomb.

The Queen’s 90th Birthday Concerts at the Forest Theatre and Priory Park, Malvern were well received by the audience and a special mention to our narrator for both concerts, Richard Dodsworth, who linked the music with a potted version of the Queen’s life.

We have one more major event in our summer calendar and that is in the Centaur at Cheltenham Racecourse. The band will be performing an hour of British music to the gathering of the Apostolic Church who will be celebrating their 100th anniversary.  Up to 2,000 delegates are expected from all over the world and it will be another great event for the band to be part of.

After our summer break we will be preparing for our autumn tour to Spain, based in Los Alcazares on the Costa Colida.  Concerts are now being arranged and we are looking forward  to a joint concert with the ex-pats band ‘Just Brass’ in Rojales and with ‘Spangles’, a Barber Shop ladies choir; more news on the concerts as the tour develops.

Many of Lydbrook ex-band members will be sad to hear of the death on 5th July of Roger Harris, husband of Mary.  Roger, who played Bb Bass in the band during the 70’s and 80’s, had been ill for some time.  Our sympathies go to Mary and their families at this sad time.  Roger’s funeral service will be private.

More news soon.
