This website was launched in 2003 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Lydbrook Band.
Formed in 1923, the band was first known as the Lydbrook Reed & Brass Band, its original conductor being Maynard Childs.
The first photograph of the band late in 1924 can be viewed here with the Christmas programme. Records tell us that bands existed in Lydbrook over 100 years ago and that the present band was an amalgamation of three smaller bands.
Mr. Maynard Childs was followed by Mr. Neville Barnett as conductor, who held this position for over 30 years before ill health forced him to retire.
Robert Morgan MBE took over from Neville Barnett in 1966 and conducted the band for about 12 years until returning to the Principal Cornet seat when another local boy, Lyndon Baglin, returned to the area and took over as conductor.
Lyndon led the band from 1979 until 1988 taking the band from the 3rd Section to Championship Section. Brian Howard took over the baton in 1991 and led the band for a further 8 years and during that time gaining the runners up prize at the First Section Finals of the 1994 National Championships at Wembley Conference Centre.
Many successful players have come through the ranks at Lydbrook to include: Lyndon Baglin (Euphonium), Brett Baker (Trombone), Bill Smith (Eb Tuba), Steve Smith (Euphonium), Robert Morgan (Cornet), Vaughan Davies (Cornet), Stuart Baglin (Euphonium), Guy Garrett (Euphonium); all have been successful on their chosen instrument and played for some of the country’s leading bands.
The band now has a policy of using different conductors for various events and two of these have had considerable success with Lydbrook.
Steve Sykes led the band to 3rd prize at the West of England Championships in 2009 and also to five successive victories at the Gloucestershire Brass Band Association annual contest. Tom Brevik from Norway led the band to their first podium finish in the West of England Championship Section in 2008.
The band has made steady improvement since Lyndon took over in 1979 and has basically had 30 years of continued success rising through the sections, as well as presenting first class concerts in and around the region.
At present the band has 10 players in its ranks under 20 years of age and this bodes well for the future. We look forward to the next decade with interest and excitement.
