Website Update - 24th August, 2010

I hope you have all had an enjoyable summer break.  Barbara and I visited Lithuania for five days in temperatures of 38°C.  Regular supporters of the band will be pleased to hear that banding is going well in Lithuania with about 25 bands in existence now compared to the 12 bands when we visited in 2006.  Well done to Remi and his team of helpers in and around Panevezys.

We were also invited to have coffee with the Mayor of Panevezys who again passed on his t

Our recent venture to Blackpool for the Spring Festival was less successful than we had hoped.  Although the band played very well we didn’t catch the ear of the adjudicators and came a lowly 16th, our worst result for some time.  Many congratulations to Alison and Debbie for their excellent work on euphonium and flugel and, of course, to Sam who stepped in on soprano just 2 weeks before the contest and did himself and the band proud.

Our next event is our Class

This coming Saturday, 15th May, the band will take part in the famous Spring Festival Contest at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool.  The competition is one of three qualifying events for the British Open Brass Band Championships held at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall in September.

The competition, which is one of the many privately owned contests in the country, is managed by Martin & Karen Mortimer, Martin being the son of the very famous cornet player and BBC present

What a great day we all had yesterday at the National Youth Brass Band Championships in Manchester where our own Youth Band played with great distinction.

Playing last in a field of 15 entries the band played to an audience of over 650 packed into the Royal Northern College of Music Theatre.  They were given tremendous applause by the audience at the end of their performance.

Adjudicator, Malcolm Brownbill, said “much to appreciate and enjoy” and

A band of 26 players will set off from the band room at 9.00 a.m. on Sunday for the trip to Manchester.  We have drawn to play number 15; the last band in the Intermediate Section.  Many of the bands we are competing against will have 40

Well, there we are, another Area Contest come and gone and I suppose that most of us were just a little disappointed with our 6th place following a very good performance from the band.

Having said that, a couple of years ago we would have been very happy with a 6th place and it’s a sign of our steady improvement that we are now looking for a higher place at the West of England area contest.

We had a tremendous run up to the contest with good rehearsals and

A satisfactory 5th place was the award for our endeavours at Porthcawl last weekend.  Having drawn to play number 1 we were fairly pleased with our placing and a better draw might have seen us a place or two higher.

We have just one more rehearsal with Steve Sykes before our friend from Norway, Tom Brevik, arrives on 3rd March to direct the band at the regional championships in Torquay on Sunday, 14th March.  Steve has been with us since Christmas rehearsing the band

Well, what can I say other than well done to the Training Band following a great victory at the GBBA Contest on Sunday.

The young players played with great enthusiasm and performed above all expectations - well that’s my expectations, theirs seemed to be much higher.  We were going for a silver award but they told me they wanted a gold award and they achieved that and also the trophy for the best band in the section (there were 8 altogether).

Well done

A very successful day out was enjoyed last Saturday by the Training Band at the Gwent Musical Festival in Cross Keys.

From a field of 5 bands the Training Band were awarded the runner up prize by adjudicator Richard Evans.  The best soloist prize was won by our soloist Ben Stratford on baritone, who gave an almost flawless performance of Grandfather’s Clock, without music, which also impressed the adjudicator.

The percussion section of Robin Hunt, Osia

News Update - 7th January

A very Happy New Year to everyone as we move into a freezing 2010.

Members will be pleased to know that the band room will be well heated prior to our first get together of the New Year hopefully weather permitting on Sunday, 10th January.

Many of the band members worked hard over the Christmas period to raise funds playing Christmas Carols and a special thanks to everyone who turned out on Christmas morning for our annual pilgrimage through the village.
