Lydbrook Training Band
One of Lydbrook's success stories in recent times has been the formation of its Training Band.
The Band meets on Monday Evenings in the Lydbrook Bandroom from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.
The Training Band consists of about 30 players ranging in age from 8 to 70 (a few retired players help the youngsters out on a few key instruments - Bb Bass for instance).
All players are welcome from Grade 2 upwards, but we really never turn anyone away.

Dear Robert,
What a wonderful experience the National Youth Championships were, and I'm referring to our enjoyment of the occasion as members of that audience. Lord knows what the boys and girls of Lydbrook Youth Band made of it; to face an auditorium packed to standing and to receive such an ovation when they entered!
The excitement amongst all the bands as they thronged the public areas outside the concert halls was palpable; but nothing like the air of expectation we in the
What a great day we all had yesterday at the National Youth Brass Band Championships in Manchester where our own Youth Band played with great distinction.
Playing last in a field of 15 entries the band played to an audience of over 650 packed into the Royal Northern College of Music Theatre. They were given tremendous applause by the audience at the end of their performance.
Adjudicator, Malcolm Brownbill, said “much to appreciate and enjoy” and
Sunday, 18th April is a big day for the Lydbrook Youth and Training Band members, when the band competes in the Co-operative National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.
A band of 26 players will set off from the band room at 9.00 a.m. on Sunday for the trip to Manchester. We have drawn to play number 15; the last band in the Intermediate Section. Many of the bands we are competing against will have 40
Well, what can I say other than well done to the Training Band following a great victory at the GBBA Contest on Sunday.
The young players played with great enthusiasm and performed above all expectations - well that’s my expectations, theirs seemed to be much higher. We were going for a silver award but they told me they wanted a gold award and they achieved that and also the trophy for the best band in the section (there were 8 altogether).
Well done
A very successful day out was enjoyed last Saturday by the Training Band at the Gwent Musical Festival in Cross Keys.
From a field of 5 bands the Training Band were awarded the runner up prize by adjudicator Richard Evans. The best soloist prize was won by our soloist Ben Stratford on baritone, who gave an almost flawless performance of Grandfather’s Clock, without music, which also impressed the adjudicator.

At last an update for the Training Band page, the first since 2007.
The Training Band is progressing well in what is a consistently changing combination of players.
Many players in the senior band have progressed through the Training Band, to include; Lauren Howell (Trombone), Sam Davis, Daniel Moss, Andrew Manning & Bethan Jones (all Cornets), Otis Williams (Euphonium), Jack Neale (Tenor Horn), Rhydian & Osian Griffiths (Percussion).

It’s been a hectic few weeks since Christmas with the Training Band competing in two contests.
First of all, on 27th January a very pleasant day was spent in Cross Keys at the Greater Gwent Youth Band Contest. Although the band was not placed in the first three, I was extremely pleased with their performance. We only had 22 players on the stage and the winners, Camborne, fielded 50 players, in what was a stunning performance.
Our soloist, Matthew Kibble, pe
It has taken us a little while to get going again with the Training Band following the summer break. However, we are now up and flying.
We have two exciting jobs coming up. First of all we are playing at the Gloucester Salvation Army Citadel on Saturday, 4th November starting at 7 pm. It’s a pay at the door event and all parents etc. are welcome - £5 and £4 concessions.
On Sunday, 3rd December the Training Band will be playing at Highnam Court f
Following the Training Band’s 1st prize at the Cross Keys contest last year, this year’s visit meant promotion to Class I and an even greater challenge. However, the youngsters at Lydbrook Training Band, together with their adult helpers, rose to the occasion once more.
An excellent performance gained them 2nd prize from a class of nine entries from England and Wales. The winners were the Swindon School of Music Band with Mid Rhondda Juniors in 3rd place.
As part of their Autumn programme the Training Band organised their own concert in Lydbrook Church on Friday evening, 21st October, when their guests were the Springfield Ladies Choir, conducted by Pam Howell.
The band performed very well, as did the choir and in particular the soloists all gave outstanding performances.
Matthew Kibble was the first soloist of the evening playing Rimmer’s ‘Wiederkehr’. This was a first public performance of this
