West of England Area Contest

Lydbrook achieve 5th place in the 2008 West of England Championship Section

Here's what 4BarsRest had to say:

"Congratulations

Warmest congratulations also go to Lydbrook under Tom Brevik. The Gloucestershire outfit came 9th here last year, but really found their feet this time around with a secure performance that was safe in its conception and very nicely executed. It also contained some fine ensemble work with special mention to Phil Storer on principal cornet who was arguably the best of the day, ably supported by Robert Morgan MBE on bumper-up.

This was a real team effort all round (the MD was excellent too) and it certainly paid dividends. To feature in the top six was well deserved."

West of England Area Contest

Lydbrook have qualified for the 1st section National Finals at Harrogate later in the year by taking 2nd place at the West of England area contest on March 18th.

We were conducted by John Berryman who we will meet again at the finals, where he will be conducting his own band, Kibworth. It was noted by all that John practices what he preaches by performing on stage without music!

This result also means that Lydbrook will be promoted to the Championship section for 2007.

A great win in section 1 for Lydbrook at Porthcawl, against some strong competition - Steve Sykes does it for us again.

GBBA Entertainment Contest, Feb 12th 2006

MORE SUCCESS FOR LYDBROOK BAND

Sunday, 12th February was the day the band completed the “hat trick” - three first prizes at successive contests.

The band also won the trophy for the most entertaining programme of the day. This was from 15 bands in all four sections.

Once again the band was conducted by Steve Sykes, whose meticulous attention to detail no doubt impressed the adjudicator.

Wychavon Festival of Brass, October 2nd 2005

Competing at the Wychavon Festival of Brass at Pershore on Sunday, 2nd October, the band was awarded 1st prize out of a strong field of 10 bands from the Midlands and Wales. And just to put the icing on the cake, euphonium soloist Les Pearse was awarded the prize for the best soloist of the day by adjudicator John Berryman.

Of course all good performances come from the inspiration and enthusiasm of the conductor and Sunday’s performance was no exception, the band having engaged the experienced Steve Sykes to conduct them. Steve’s attention to detail is second to none and it’s true to say that he inspired the band to one of their best performances in recent years. Thanks Steve, it’s been a pleasure once again to work with you and to meet up with Joanne, Stephen, Carlton and yourself again.

Whit Friday Marches - 4th June, 2004

Another great couple of days were enjoyed by the band members last weekend at the Whit Friday March Contest in the Saddleworth area of Manchester.

The event was very well organised by "Judge" Brian Ireland and we are all grateful to him for his hard work in making the necessary arrangements with the hotel, coaches, routes etc.

Thanks also to Chairman, Trev for the quiz and photo competition which helped the time go so quickly during our travels.

The band played very well during the course of the evening, using our own march "Lydbrook" composed by David Morgan for our 80th Anniversary, on the road and George Allan's "Senator" for the contest.

Thanks once again to David Williams for conducting the band during the evening. The band and David certainly work well together and it's always a pleasure to have Dave and his wife Margaret along with the band.

Thanks also to our three helpers for the evening Rhodri Griffiths on Bass, Jo Millin on Baritone and our old friend Clive Lewis on Cornet.

6th place at Dobcross is a fantastic result for the band - we did play particularly well at that venue, and it was good to call and see our new friends David and Helen Morris, "The World Champion Whistler", at their home in Dobcross. Many thanks to them for their hospitality.

Once again a great weekend for the band - excellent playing, excellent company and we look forward now to our summer programme of events.

A good day at 'the races' was had on Sunday at the

annual GBBA Entertainments Contest.

First to play were the training band who again made their conductor, Robert Morgan a happy man. Robert said "once again the training band played above themselves and they are making real progress this year".

Well done to Sam Davies who was the training band's soloist for their short programme. Playing Neil Diamond's hit 'Solitaire', Sam performed his first solo for the band with great confidence and maturity and helped the band to 3rd prize in the 4th Section.

The youngest player of the day went to one of the band's newest members, 9 year old Rebecca Purvis - well done Rebecca.

The senior band played later in the day and came second to Welsh band Ammanford Town (congratulations to them).

Les Pearse, the band's principal euphonium player was awarded the prize for best soloist of the day for a truly outstanding performance of his solo 'Song of the Brother' by Erik Leidzen.

The band also won the prize for the most entertaining band of the day, as well as the adjudicator saying from the stage that the band who came second were the most musical band.

Thanks are due to our old friend Brian Howard for stepping in and taking the band to the contest. It was a pleasure to have Brian back with us again.

During rehearsal last week, band Chairman, Trevor Moss took the opportunity to present Brian with a cheque for £300.00 towards the Athol Evans Hospital in Zimbabwe, raised between the band and the Chepstow Male Voice Choir at the Christmas Concert.

Having heard how the money was to be spent, two of the band's young percussion players, Liam Cruise-Taylor and Rhydian Griffiths decided that they would like to help out and will carry out a 24-hour sponsored "drum bash" from 6.30 p.m. on Saturday, 28th February to 6.30 p.m. on Sunday, 29th February. If anyone is interested in sponsoring them please contact Robert Morgan (01594 860944) for details.

Well done lads - we are all very proud of you.

The band's AGM is this week - details in due course.

A mixed bag was the order of the day at the GBBA Contest on Sunday.

In the March contest we gained 1st prize playing David Morgan's "Onwards & Upwards", following the win last year with the same march. David is a very talented musician and has conducted the band on a number of occasions. He was also commissioned to write the march "Lydbrook" as part of the band's 80th anniversary celebrations.

The test piece this year was own choice by Eric Ball. The band chose Resurgam as their piece and were very satisfied with their performance, unlike the adjudicator who placed them 4th (or last, depending on your outlook).

Perhaps we were comforted by his remark that on another day the results could have been different because he was pleased with all the performances.

Congratulations to our horn section in gaining the tenor horn prize - Trevor Evans, Solo Horn, Paula Ingleby, 1st Horn, Barbara Morgan, 2nd Horn and Marie Pearse on Flugel Horn.

Well done to Forest of Dean Brass for taking the top prize of the day and Craig Wintle for the best cornet and instrumentalist of the day awards.

The band's next contest will be on 15th February at the GBBA Entertainments Contest.
